I grew up with many of the children of these Germans .I still live next door to great- grandchildren of these Germans .They do not speak German. I live in the Cape Canaveral area of Florida since early1960's .So many people retire to Florida and Germans who worked in aerospace just stayed here when they retired .My father used to go to estate sales all the time around here .At some of these garage sales he would find old German items with NAZI markings .I still have these items. I went to school with children of these Germans here and in Huntsville,Alabama .I borrowed lederhosen from German neighbors for a school play in Huntsville . Von Braun's house had a paved yard painted green in Huntsville .He didn't have to mow that yard.

I am really intrigued by her saying JB grew the most in the book because I actually thought the opposite. He did mature, he did become clean, but his relationships were always unsteady outside his core friends and when he kissed Jude during the finals chapters I wanted to smack him 😂 I thought that was so out of bounds and presumptuous and I said to myself he really hasn’t changed much at all. I personally saw a lot more growth from Malcolm 🤷🏼‍♀️ but I did love and appreciate JB for being unapologetically authentic to himself. His art work was such a contrast to him as a person in my opinion

This is an amazingly well writing book. It is also the worse book I've ever read and from what I've read of the author, she is either a bad writer or a bad person. This is not a heartbreaking look into trauma, this is a cliched and harmful message that suicide, self harm, and toxic relationships are the only answer.

I wish more people would talk about the heinous actions of the Koch Bros. for the last 40+ years, especially their master plan to dumb down America.

Years ago, I became friends with an author I much admired, Drusilla Campbell, now sadly deceased. Her writing displayed such precise observation, such insight about human nature, and such luminous expression, not to mention wit, that being in her presence was intimidating. I feared she would see through the slightest pretense, snicker at the slightest obscurity or laziness. So whenever I was with her, I would sharpen up my attention and take care with every utterance. Helen Simonson's writing evokes the same reaction. How stimulating a friend she must be and, in her sweet genteel English manner, how imposing.

Watching this in 2024, and my god the audience asked some great and pertinent questions!
